About the game

Beyond Return is a horror game shot entirely through a police bodycam. You play Adrian Mahalean, an officer sent out to a call in the Romanian countryside — forest road, a village that's mostly empty now, a cemetery nobody has been paid to look after in a long time.

The camera runs the whole time you're out there. You'll catch yourself watching the edges of the frame instead of the middle, and you won't always be certain that you and the lens saw the same thing.

It starts slow and it stays quiet for a long time. It does not stay quiet. Most of it is you keeping your eyes on something until you work out what is wrong with it — the rest is deciding, fast, whether to hold still or run.

Found footage

There is a second thing on this site: the footage itself. A recovery terminal where you open what came back off the camera and make your own mind up about what you are looking at.

It gets added to while the game is in development, so there will be more on it later than there is today.

WrathEye Studios

WrathEye Studios is me and a copy of Unreal Engine 5. Every scare gets tested on me first, which mostly means walking the same stretch of road until it stops working and then pulling it apart again.

Beyond Return is the first thing I have made that I would actually want somebody else to play. It is set in the part of rural Romania I spent summers in as a kid, where the church bell went often enough that you stopped asking who it was for.

Everything here comes off one desk, including these sentences. The upside is that nobody waters anything down. The downside is that nobody tells me when I have got it wrong, so if something here does not land, I would rather hear it.

Description

Beyond Return is a first-person horror game shown entirely through a police body camera. You play Adrian Mahalean, a Romanian officer sent to a remote village to write up a death. The village has been emptying out for years and the roads there are badly kept.

The game is grounded and deliberately slow to escalate. It leans on the countryside, on real regional burial customs, and on how much the player is willing to trust a recording.

History

Beyond Return is made by one person under the name WrathEye Studios. It started from two things I kept coming back to: found-footage horror of the Marble Hornets sort, where you are mostly just watching badly framed video and getting uneasy, and the folklore of the Romanian countryside I grew up visiting.

REPLACE ME: add when development started, engine/build milestones, any festival or showcase appearances.

Support the studio

The most useful thing you can do costs nothing: wishlist the game on Steam. After that, tell someone about it — that is genuinely most of how a game like this gets found.

If you want to put money in, it pays for the boring things — software licences, asset packs, and hours I would otherwise have to spend on other work. You do not owe me this, and the game comes out either way.
